It is a mostly residential neighborhood that has many houses from the early and middle of the twentieth century. It was zoned strictly residential, allowing for nothing but one-family homes, with a maximum of a one car garage. There are many Colonial Revival-, Tudor-, and Arts & Crafts-style homes, and every year there is an annual event known as the Strathmore House Tour, where five renovated houses are open to the public.

Strathmore is a fabulous neighborhood full of historic and beautiful homes. The neighborhood reflects residential tastes from the late 19th century through the 1920's, showcasing the eclectic styles of Late Victorian, Colonial Revival, and Arts & Crafts architecture.  Many great architects have built homes in this neighborhood. You will find several original Ward Wellington Ward homes, arts and crafts bungalows, original built in Stickley cupboards, leaded glass windows and much more. There is so much character in the homes in Strathmore that there is an annual Tour of Historic and beautiful homes which draws 600-900 visitors each year. 

Srathmore is conveniently located minutes from Downtown & Armory Square, the Zoo, Syracuse University, and the Carousel Mall. Strathmore features elegant, historic homes mixed with affordable middle class housing.  One of the most beautiful of all Syracuse Parks, Onondaga Park is located in Strathmore. It contains Hiawatha Lake, a historic bathhouse, a swimming pool, and several picnic pavilions. The City's Woodland Reservoir is also located in this neighborhood and provides a wonderful green space for recreation such as walking and jogging. Wadsworth Park, home to the Southside American Little League, leads into the Winkworth section of Strathmore. The Winkworth area is home to the nationally renowned Bellevue Country Club that boasts one of the finest golf courses in the State of New York.

The Schools

Many neighbors walk to school at JT Roberts k-8 and Corcoran High School. Both schools have very active PTO organizations. Corcoran is one of the only schools in the state that offers the International Baccalauriate program. Students can graduate from Corcoran with enough college credits to start college as a Junior. The Bishops Accademy at Most Holy Rosary k-6 Catholic school.

Neighborhood Events

Socal Activities  The Strathmore Mens Athletic Club meets monthly at Swallow's (bar). The Margarita Moms, a network of 40-50 (and growing) young women in Strathmore who meet monthly at someone's home for social time and cocktails. The MM's organize the childrens Halloween Parade, The Firebarn Cafe and the Neighborhood Garage Sale. Another all inclusive ladies gathering in Strathmore monthly for cocktails, socializing..all strathmore ladies are welcome.

Art on the Porches 40-60 artists show and sell their work on the front porches of the historic homes on Ruskin Ave. Street festival, music, food, poetry,crafts for kids.

The Parks Run 5k race and kids run to benefit Sarah House (for visiting extended hospital stay families) Run through Onondaga, Elmwood and the Woodland reservoir.
Meet the Candidates Night - Each November during an election. All candidates for all public local and county offices come and speak to neighbors and answer questions from neighbors.

Recommended Vendor trade show Neighbors recommend home improvement specialists to each other. Those companies that are recommended are invited to participate in a trade show that is advertised to neighbors. Discounts on services are offered.

The Father Daughter Dance Held annually at Most Holy Rosary. Dads and their daugters spend this very special night dressing up, dancing and winning great raffle prizes. Portrait included.

Athletics

There are two womens indoor soccer teams year round and several pick up mens soccer games in the spring and summer. There are several great running places in the neighborhood. Onondaga Park is just about 1 mile around the lake and the Woodland reservoir is about 3/4 mile around the track. there is also a beautiful 3 mil fottball/soccer field and track at Corcoran HS. There is also a Olympic sized pool at Onondaga park with free swimming lessons for kids (city residents) in the summer
